Hand-knotted abstract rugs
The first method of how abstract rugs are made is via the tried and true, age-old method of hand-knotting. This handmade process will create the best possible abstract rug, and it starts with the weaver. They decide the \u201cstory\u201d a rug<\/a> will tell,
selecting colors and patterns before creating the first knot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the weaver will select their material of choice, often dying it if it doesn\u2019t come pre-colored. Next, they will stretch their canvas along the frame. After that, they systemically work up and down the canvas, creating knots with the fabric until they\u2019ve completed the rug. It\u2019s a painstakingly long process, but one that produces a product no machine could ever hope to match. While a weaver may create several rugs in a similar style, they will never be physically the same as each rug is unique with minor variations between pieces.

Hand-tufted abstract rugs
The second most common way to make an abstract rug is via the hand-tuft method.
This is also a partially handmade process, though the primary difference is that the
weaver will use a tool called a tufting gun. It helps to produce the rug faster than with
the slower hand-knotted method. The process is the same as with hand-knotted rugs<\/a>
up to the point the weaver picks up the tufting gun. This tool helps to push the fabric
through the canvas.

Technically, hand-tufted rugs<\/a> are considered semi-handmade, though their quality is
exceptionally high as it requires a unique skill set to properly hand-tuft a rug.

Mass-produced via machine
Finally, the third most common method \u2014 though also the one that produces the lowest quality product \u2014 is a machine mass-produced abstract rug. These rugs were created on electrical looms and while they can appear physically identical, are often
made with lower-quality materials as well as show wear and tear much faster.
