However, this isn\u2019t exactly the case. An antique rug may have a distressed&nbsp; look, but that doesn\u2019t mean it&#8217;s a distressed rug. Likewise, a distressed rug may look&nbsp; old but this doesn\u2019t automatically mean it&#8217;s antique.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So what makes a rug antique?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we\u2019ve stated <a href=\"https:\/\/rugsource.com\/antique-rugs\">elsewhere<\/a>, an antique rug is highly desirable. These rugs are hand made, using hand-knotted techniques that have been around for centuries. Some&nbsp; definitions apply a specific timeframe for an object to be considered antique. Most&nbsp; commonly, this is at least 100 years, with the term \u201cvintage\u201d being used to describe&nbsp; items less than 100 years old but older than 50.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Then what makes a rug distressed?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the rug industry, there are several other categories to keep in mind when&nbsp; defining the term \u201cdistressed rug.\u201d The first is modern: while often used to refer to an&nbsp; aesthetic, a modern rug is one that was crafted by a skilled weaver relatively recently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second category to remember is vintage. In addition, to be\u00a0 considered distressed a rug has had various \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distressing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">distressing<\/a>\u201d techniques applied to it,\u00a0 giving it an aged look and feel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as using them in your home, distressed rugs come in a wide variety of colors&nbsp; and patterns. They can fit in with just about any decor and space. As with other styles&nbsp; of rugs, pairing it with your existing room colors, layout, and style is vitally important to&nbsp; making the rug work for you. And more often than not, even with the applied&nbsp; distressing techniques, their high-quality, hand-woven nature will help them last for&nbsp; decades to come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One final note: while a distressed rug can also be a vintage rug, not all <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/rugsource.com\/vintage-rugs\" title=\"vintage rugs\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">vintage rugs<\/a> are&nbsp; considered distressed. Remember, distressing is an intentional process to give the rug&nbsp; a worn look.
