If you\u2019re in that boat, take a moment to look at&nbsp; your area rugs. Do their sizes \u201cfeel\u201d right to you or does something feel off about them?&nbsp; Before you purchase your next rug, let\u2019s talk about whether it&#8217;s better to have a rug&nbsp; that\u2019s too big or too small.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The purpose of an area rug&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some homes have hardwood throughout each of their rooms. Others have carpeting.&nbsp; Both have something in common, however.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/rugsource.com\/area-rugs\" title=\"Area rugs\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Area rugs<\/a>. Regardless of the type of flooring in your home, most homeowners have&nbsp; some kind of area <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/rugsource.com\/\" title=\"rug\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">rug<\/a>. It serves several purposes, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Reducing noise in your home;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Providing warmth and comfort (especially true with hardwood); \u2022 Keeping your furniture from moving, and;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marthastewart.com\/1506247\/rules-keep-mind-decorating-living-room\">Creatively<\/a> tying your decor together and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homesandgardens.com\/ideas\/living-room-rug-ideas\">completing<\/a> its look.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to measure for a new rug&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When figuring out your needed size for an area rug, start by using painter&#8217;s tape to&nbsp; mark off the edges of your furniture layout. Next, empty the space as best as you can.&nbsp; Then, using a straight edge such as a yardstick, mark off the ideal location of your rug.&nbsp; Finally, measure its length by width.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Standard rug sizes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several sizes of standard rugs. Those are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 3&#215;5;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 4&#215;6;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 5&#215;8;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 7&#215;10;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 8&#215;11, and;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 9&#215;12;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your measurements may not match these standard sizes exactly, so now you should&nbsp; remeasure. Tape off a size down and a size up. Simply put, you should&nbsp; never go with a rug that\u2019s too small for the space. As a basic example, imagine sitting&nbsp; around your dining room table with a rug below it. Now, imagine the front of your chair&nbsp; legs on the rug while the back is on a hardwood surface. Feels unbalanced, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rug can also be too big, as you want at least ten inches between the edge of your&nbsp; rug and the wall. A rug that touches or even folds up along the bottom of your wall is&nbsp; never a good idea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we believe that the better of the two options is a rug that\u2019s too big \u2014 within&nbsp; reason. As long as you\u2019re not experiencing what we just described, a rug that\u2019s too big&nbsp; is better than one that\u2019s too small.
