East Azerbaijan is one of Iran\u2019s 31 distinct provinces and is located in the Northwest corner of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, East Azerbaijan can trace its roots back to at least the 4th Century BCE. Approximately four million people live in this province, making it similar in size to the state of Oklahoma. Culturally speaking, East Azerbaijan is a varied region despite its relatively small size. Today, it serves as the region\u2019s center for both manufacturing and academics. This duality is how the area embraces the needs of modern society while still remaining true to its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The province is broken up into fourteen administrative divisions, which function similarly to the counties that make up each state in America. The two divisions we\u2019re focusing on today are Heris and Serab, which is where the name of the style comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><em>Heris, Iran<\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weaving techniques of Heriz Serapi rugs are the combination of two distinct yet similar weaving styles. Heris is the capital of Heris County and the first of two influences that created this style. Heriz rugs feature large geometric designs with a distinctly tribal influence. The weaving techniques used by weavers from Heris are similar in style to other&nbsp;Persian rugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Serab, Iran<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serab (sometimes spelled <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarab,_East_Azerbaijan\">Sarab<\/a>) is located east of Heris and provides the second major influence on the Heriz Serapi style. Unlike other styles of Persian rugs, Serapi rugs contain intricate details and incredibly complex patterns. Compared to Heriz rugs, Serapi rugs are much more intricately detailed. Additionally, Heriz rugs typically have a knotting density of 65 KPI (knots per inch), though that number can sometimes be as high as 100 KPI. In contrast, a Serapi rug has a considerably higher knotting density.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how did the weaving techniques of Heriz Serapi rugs come to be? Sometime before the 1900s, weavers from Heris contributed designs that feature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/medallion-carpet#:~:text=medallion%20carpet%2C%20any%20floor%20covering,%2C%20quatrefoiled%2C%20or%20octagonal%20figure.\">bold medallions<\/a> in the center, and weavers from Serab added both intricate detailing and a higher knotting density.
