But by the time the person is finished, that rug is fit for a king! You may want to practice some of the techniques we outline here on a machine-made rug so that you get used to the processes before tackling a vintage rug project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It takes time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How often do you vacuum your current living room rug? Whether you have a traditional rectangular rug, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rugsource.com\/the-functions-of-runner-rugs-vs-area-rugs\/\">runner rug<\/a>, or a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rugsource.com\/how-to-size-and-decorate-with-round-rugs\/\">round rug<\/a>, it probably takes you less than half an hour to clean your current flooring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there is a significant difference between cleaning something and restoring it. Depending on the level of dirt and grime that has been embedded into the rug\u2019s fibers, you can probably expect to spend the better part of a day if you were to restore it yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It starts with cleaning the rug, often using nothing more than water from a water hose. Once the initial layer of dirt has been removed, you can then use a mild dish soap to carefully scrub the fibers. Then, rinse it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, you quite literally wash, rinse, and repeat. This process can take hours because you need to go slowly. After all, you don\u2019t want to damage it during any of the rug restoration and repair processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, if you\u2019re feeling especially bold, you may want to \u201cshave\u201d the pile of the rug. This is as dangerous as it sounds. Using specialized tools, you gently remove the top few millimeters of faded threads. This helps to bring out the vibrant remnant below. The first is the type of materials that the weaver used. Natural fibers such as silk, wool, and cotton will be much easier to restore than synthetic ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, the higher the knot count, the more naturally durable the rug is. This means it will withstand the restoration process much more easily!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rug restoration and repair will reveal a diamond in the rough.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While restoring an old rug may seem like an intimidating project, we want to emphasize this point.
