The production of prized Persian rugs hit high points during two time periods: the 16th and early 17th centuries and the second half of the 19th century into the early 20th century.
Rugs made during the first time period were produced during the Golden Age of Persian Weaving under the reign of Shah Abbas, who was known for supporting the arts. Many of the designs you’ll see on antique Kashan rugs originated during this time period, including the garden motif.
The garden design was based on the Royal Garden of Kashan, which was constructed by Shah Abbas, who is widely recognized as the most influential monarch of the Safavid Dynasty. Also referred to as the “Garden of Paradise,” the Royal Garden of Kashan has been remarkably well preserved since the 16th century and it still has water running through it today.
A majority of the vintage Kashan rugs available on the market today were made during the second half of the 19th century into the early part of the 20th century. During this time span, these rugs were either made to sell domestically or overseas or they were commissioned by individual homeowners.
While some Kashan Persian rugs have some silk worked into their construction, these rugs have historically been made using the finest quality wool available. Early Kashan rugs were made with wool that was imported from the city of Manchester in the United Kingdom. The wool used in later rugs was sourced from Sabzevar.
Older Persian rugs got their color from vegetable dyes. Craftsmen and women used chrome dyes to add vibrant color to more modern Kashan rugs beginning in the 1930s.
The Mohtasham Kashan is the rarest kind of Kashan rug that has non-conventional patterns and colors. Made through the end of the 19th century, these rugs were made with a high-quality lamb’s wool that’s often described as “luminous.” This characteristic gives Mohtasham Kashan rugs an appearance that’s almost reflective.
A Mohtasham Kashan rug is even more finely knotted than most other Persian rugs. These rugs are typically adorned with a teardrop medallion or a blossom and leaf pattern that runs throughout the entire rug. The most sought-after Mohtasham Kashan rugs have an antique ivory or gold background and they show off plenty of detail..
