Oriental Rugs

For many, buying an Oriental rug means more than purchasing a rug as a decoration or floor covering. Instead, buying an Oriental rug is often an investment in an heirloom piece that can be handed down through generations. Oriental rugs are genuine pieces of art that are known for being as durable and long lasting as they are well-made and stunning.

A traditional Oriental rug is a heavy pile, hand-woven rug. While no one knows exactly how long Oriental rugs have been produced, the oldest Oriental rug, which is known as the Pazyryk rug, dates all the way back to the fifth century B.C. That rug was found intact by a Russian archaeologist in the 1940s.

Oriental Rugs vs. Persian Rugs

If this is the first time you have looked for Oriental rugs for sale, you are probably wondering what the difference is between Persian rugs and cheap Oriental area rugs. This is common, because too many people use the terms Persian rug and Oriental rug interchangeably when it is not always appropriate to do so.

The easiest way for you to understand the difference between discount Oriental rugs and Persian rugs is to recognize that every Persian rug is also an Oriental rug, but not every Oriental rug is a Persian rug. Persian rugs are exclusively made in what is now Iran. Oriental rugs are made in Iran or any other country that is part of the Orient, including Afghanistan, India and Turkey.

How Oriental Rugs Are Made

Authentic Oriental rugs are handmade using a loom. Strands of wool, cotton or silk, which are called warps, are stretched across a loom from top to bottom. A highly skilled artisan then weaves horizontal rows between the warps by hand. These horizontal rows are known as wefts. A pile is created when the warps are tied together. Even an experienced rug-maker can take up to six months to produce a single Oriental rug that measures 6 by 9 feet.

Because Oriental rugs are made on a vertical loom and every knot used to make a rug is pulled downward, Oriental rugs have a direction. This direction is what makes an Oriental rug look different when you view it from the top instead of from the bottom or flatweave.

What to Look for

As you look through cheap Oriental rugs to find the one that is right for the space you’re decorating, there are a few things you should keep an eye out for. The field, or a rug’s background, is a big consideration, for instance. In many instances, you will find a motif that’s round or shaped like a diamond in a rug’s field. This is known as a central medallion.

It is important for you to give this some thought, because it may influence how you position the furniture in your room or your decision to buy one rug over another. Depending on your personal taste, it may be wiser to purchase an Oriental rug with an allover pattern if you intend to position your furniture on the rug in an asymmetrical manner.

Border colors and guard stripes are also important considerations when you are looking for Oriental rugs for sale because you want to make sure the colors will go well with your room’s overall aesthetic.
