What materials are used in Turkish rugs?

Among our various selections of high-quality, handmade rugs are the category of  Turkish Rugs. These hail from the country of Turkey and are made using age-old  techniques and skills. They come in two types and weavers use several distinct  varieties of materials. Let’s look at the materials that are used in Turkish Rugs and why  they’re popular choices.

Types of Turkish Rugs

First, let’s review the two primary types of Turkish Rugs. The first is Kilim, a style of rug  with a flat-woven texture. Kilim Rugs are thought to have first originated in Çatalhöyük  over 9,000 years ago.

The second is Hali, an intricately knotted style of rug. Hali dates back to around the  12th Century A.D. As with Kilim Rugs, Hali Rugs are incredibly beautiful and use only  the highest-grade materials.

Wool

The first type of material a weaver has at their disposal is wool. Harvested from sheep,  wool is an excellent choice for a Turkish Rug. Not only is it comfortable to walk on, but  the high-quality wool also helps to create increased durability within the rug itself. A  Turkish Rug using wool will last you for an extremely long time, especially when  properly tended and cared for as a part of your home’s decor.

Cotton

Cotton is another well-known common material used in Turkish Rugs. If you grab a  cotton shirt from your closet and inspect its quality, the first thing you might notice is  that it has an off-the-shelf feel to it. It might last you a couple of years before being  recycled.

Cotton in a Turkish Rug is much higher grade. It’s known to last and provides an  excellent base for the rug’s design.

Silk

Luxury might not be something you think of normally when it comes to an area rug, but  hear us out. If wool and cotton are the Chevy and Ford of the rug industry, then silk is  the Rolls Royce. In fact, high-quality silk is the reason that this region earned the  nickname “The Silk Road.”

When used in a Turkish Rug, silk provides an amazing sense of comfort, hence why it’s  considered to be such a valuable commodity.

Natural dyes

The final material used in Turkish Rugs is the dye. Every Turkish Rug has some kind of  pattern, a choice of color, and motifs to help communicate the story the weaver wants  to tell. How do they do this? They do so by dying their wool, cotton, or silk using

natural dyes. To be a genuine Turkish Rug, it must use natural dyes (such as those from  vegetables) in place of artificial pigments.
