Home Décor and Sustainability: How Hand-Made Rugs Contribute to Greener Homes
In many industries across the world, there is a renewed focus on sustainability. Today, more and more consumers are aware of the impact each of us has on both the planet as well as future generations. Both eco-friendly materials and production processes are a part of this initiative, and the same is true within the rug industry. That’s why in today’s blog, we’re exploring sustainable rug options and how they can be the right choice for you.
Sustainably Sourced Materials
There is a direct correlation between quality and sustainable rug options. Often, mass-produced rugs use synthetic materials with a lower knotting count (but more on that in a moment). Within the rug industry, high-quality rugs also use materials made from renewable resources.
What are those? That’s easy: silk, wool, and cotton. Each of these comes from parts of the globe that continue to practice pre-industrialization methods of weaving. Along with that comes using natural materials that have less of an impact on the environment than their synthetic brethren.
All-Natural Dyes
Look at the things around your home: your clothes, your furniture, the paint on the walls, and so on. Do you know what most of these items have in common?
The method of producing their respective color most likely came from a synthetic source. One of the most common food coloring options is Red Dye 40. It’s in many different types of food from candy to store-bought red velvet cake.
However, if you buy a red velvet cake from a traditional baker, it’s highly likely that the baker used a natural dye. One option is beet juice; beet juice can create a rich red color that a synthetic ingredient cannot match.
Just like the baker in our example, many rug-weavers steer clear of artificial colors and derive their dyes from fruits, vegetables, and other plants. Natural vegetable dyes are renewable, which means they’re both eco-friendly and better for your family’s health.
Eco-Friendly Weaving Options
One of the primary causes of pollution is the world’s tendency to prioritize production speed and uniformity over sustainability. As a society, we need industrialization to do our jobs and keep our homes functional, but this is not true of the rug industry.
Instead of relying on machines, modern artisans create high-quality rugs by using traditional looms of various kinds. This means that the rug you buy from a place like Rug Source will not only have an artistic flair to it, but it will also have a higher knot count. This helps to make it more durable, which means you won’t need a replacement as soon — and that is yet another sustainability benefit!
