Who are the Balouch people?

It’s estimated that approximately 10 million people currently identify as a part of the Balouch culture. Most of them are spread across portions of Asia collectively known as the Balochistan region. This encompasses portions of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan.

The primary language they speak is referred to as Balochi, and many trace their region’s origins back to the 7th Century. With many tribes and unique aspects of their culture, it would be challenging to cover them all today. Nevertheless, the Balouch people are proud of their heritage. In terms of their faith, many of them are Hindu.

What is a Balouch rug?

Today, we’re focusing on the timeless beauty of Balouch rugs. A Balouch rug would be a part of the larger Persian rug family based on geography and cultural origins through the Ottoman Empire. We’ll use the standard American pickup truck as an example if you’re looking for an analogy. A Persian rug would be the overarching category: trucks. A Balouch rug would be a subset, such as a 4×4 pickup with a tow package.

Balouch rugs are made throughout the regions we mentioned, and they carry unique cultural traits. Just as the United States is a melting pot of cultures and histories, so are Balouch rugs.

How do weavers create Balouch rugs?

The timeless beauty of Balouch rugs harkens back to its original creation as a handmade masterpiece. Artisan weavers across these regions follow many of the same best practices for handmade rugs as other rug families.

What makes Balouch rugs so unique?

So what makes them different exactly? Similar to Heriz Serapi rugs, it’s the blending of different regions and cultures inherent to the people of these regions. Simply put, a Balouch rug incorporates many regional influences into a beautiful rug for your home.

In terms of colors, Balouch rugs tend to lean toward darker tones such as reds, browns, blacks, and purples. In terms of patterns, weavers often prefer repeating patterns. You’ll find geometric designs ranging from hexagons to triangles and everything in between. Sometimes, a weaver will even incorporate pictorial designs into their rugs.

When blended with the color choices we mentioned, in addition to the repetition, a Balouch rug can stand out from other Persian rugs. This is again one of the things that helps make the timeless beauty of Balouch rugs so distinctive.
