Rug Restoration and Preservation – Caring for Over-Dyed Rugs
Have you ever noticed how much love and care a classic car enthusiast puts into protecting their collection? We’re sure each of our readers could think of a friend or family member who spends hours upon hours ensuring that their cars look and operate in peak condition. Did you know there are also those equally focused on rug restoration and preservation? Specifically, we’re going to look at caring for your over-dyed rugs. Without a doubt, these treasures are worth preserving!
The Importance of Maintenance for Over-Dyed Rugs
As with many other categories of rugs, your purchase is often an investment. These home decor pieces are meant to last, both through their durability and design. However, as with any purchase, it won’t last as long as it should if you don’t take care of it.
Caring for your over-dyed rugs is just as important as an annual chimney cleaning, washing your car, and so on. In addition, extending the life of an over-dyed rug is a great way to go green if that’s one of your concerns.
Over-Dyed Rug Restoration
While some homeowners may choose to tackle the over-dyeing process on their own, most will purchase an over-dyed rug. However, before that can happen, the rug will often receive a deep cleaning and, sometimes, a “shearing” to remove the top layer of faded fabric.
Preservation Tip #1: Shaking Out the Dirt
Once you’ve laid out your over-dyed rug, you’ll need to clean it to help preserve it. Start by hanging your rug outside, either on a clothesline or over a deck railing. Then, carefully break any embedded dirt by beating on the back side of the rug.
Preservation tip #2: Vacuuming When Needed
If there’s any dirt left on the rug after beating it, you may need to vacuum the rug to remove the rest. Remember that if you’re going to vacuum your rug, be sure to avoid any fringes.
Preservation tip #3: Spot Cleaning Stains
If you spill something on your over-dyed rug, be sure to clean it immediately to prevent the stain from setting. Soak up spills as soon as they happen. However, if need be, you can also spot-clean your over-dyed rug using a diluted soap and water solution. Use a second bucket and rag to soak up any suds until the stain is gone.
Preservation tip #4: Rotating the Rug Regularly
Our final tip for caring for your over-dyed treasure is to rotate it routinely. If your rug is in a primary walkway, this tip can help prevent excessive wear and tear on one part of your rug.
