What Is an Over-Dyed Rug?

Persian rugs? Check. Oriental rugs? Check. Oushak rugs? Check. What is an over-dyed rug?

Notice we didn’t say check. While we’ve covered this topic extensively in the past few weeks, many of our readers may still be looking for an answer to that question. So, what is an over-dyed rug? Join us as we answer that question today!

Where Over-Dyed Rugs Come From

Let’s start by discussing age. While some over-dyed rugs may be brand-new weaves, most will be relatively older. This is because, most of the time, artisans over-dye rugs to mask signs of wear and tear.

Over time, rugs will show their age. Our industry usually refers to these as “distressed” rugs. However, weavers can give an over-dyed rug an artificially distressed appearance to create a different aesthetic.

In short, an over-dyed rug is usually an up-cycled vintage or antique, though not always.

Pattern and Design Characteristics

One of the characteristics of an over-dyed rug is that it maintains the pattern the weaver initially created. This means that the over-dyeing process will preserve whatever story the weaver wanted to tell, whether that story is cultural, historical, or personal. However, while the imagery will remain the same, over-dyeing often radically changes the rug’s color, which brings us to our next point.

Color Palettes

Over-dyeing a rug will completely transform its color. For example, let’s say your rug was a simple area rug with a giant white diamond in the middle on top of a navy background.

With the magic of over-dyeing, a skilled artisan can use a blue dye to make the navy areas darker—closer to gray or black—while the white areas turn blue.

Distressed Appearance

Over-dyeing is an artificially distressed process. It can make the rug look worn or older than it really is. Why do rug weavers do this? The answer is simple: either to preserve the rug or to repurpose it. When a rug shows signs of age, over-dyeing is a simple way to make it look young again.

High Quality

Please note that over-dyeing a rug does not diminish its quality. Instead, over-dyeing revitalizes the rug’s appearance while preserving its durability and longevity. This means that when you buy an over-dyed rug, you can expect the same expert construction and high-quality materials in Rug Source’s other rugs.
