If you’re updating the look and design of your home, you’ve probably thought about how the various pieces will work together. A great way to bring each aspect of your space into a cohesive design is with an antique rug. Of course, there’s the question of sizing. Here are a few considerations to help you choose the right size antique rug for any space in your home.
First, is the rug an authentic antique rug?
While our focus today is on how to choose the right size antique rug, we thought it was important to briefly discuss authenticity. After all, you don’t want to make a mistake with your purchase by investing in a rug that claims to be antique but in reality, isn’t.
So what is an antique rug? Simply put, to be antique the rug must be at least 100 years old. Even if you purchased the rug from an antique store, that doesn’t mean it’s automatically antique. More than likely, the rug is vintage unless the shop owner can verify its age.
Should I size up or size down?
There is a debate within some home decor circles: is it okay to buy a rug that is too big or too small? Let’s talk about that for a moment.
Generally speaking, a rug should never “touch” your walls. You will always want to have a few inches of space, usually around six, between the edge of your rug and where your walls begin.
However, for some, this is too big of an area rug. They would prefer if the rug only filled the seating area of their living room. In the rest of the space, they want to showcase their hardwood or recently installed carpeting.
So once you’ve verified the rug you’re about to buy is truly antique, you’ll want to decide if the rug fits the space in a way that matches your preferences. What are those options? There are four primary ways to choose the right size for an antique rug.
How do I choose the size I want?
So let’s look at the four main design choices when it comes to choosing a rug’s size. Those are:
- All-over rugs, which will fill the entire room;
- To the back legs, which means that your rug will stop just beyond the point where the back legs of your furniture sit on your floor;
- To the front legs, which means that your rug will stop an inch or two beyond the front legs of each piece of furniture, and;
- Centerpiece-style, which means that the rug primary will sit under a central coffee table but nothing else.
