Creative Ways to Use Round Rugs in Interior Design

Round rugs have many benefits. One of them is that they help to make a small space seem larger. However, there are also many creative ways to use round rugs in interior design. Here are some of our favorite methods or effects a round rug can have on your home.

Create a visual center in the room.

The most obvious way to use round rugs in interior design is to put them under your furniture to center the space. This works for both living and dining rooms, though the latter would be a more common usage. But in either case, purchase a round rug large enough to accommodate your furniture; if for under a table, consider how far out the rear legs of your chairs will be when someone sits on one.

This acts as a way of highlighting just that piece, especially if the table itself is round.

Offset the rug under a bed.

Centering isn’t the only way to use a round rug in your home’s interior design. You can also use it in offset styling, especially in a bedroom.

Purchase a rug that’s at least as long as your bed. Then, below the halfway point, place your rug. The curved edges of it will then extend both along the sides and the foot of your bed, creating a unique effect that is a head-turner!

Highlight other curved surfaces in the room.

Do you have curved elements in your home? Perhaps you have a round coffee table, dining room table, or archway. A round rug’s natural curve will help accent these items or shapes.

You can even use it as a pseudo “entryway” to a reading nook as a bonus. Perhaps your round coffee table is next to a chair. Place the rug in front of the chair so that the rug is fully visible to maximize its effect on the space.

Make a bold, stunning statement.

In a previous post, we covered ways rugs can make a statement in your home’s decor. As an extension of that concept, round rugs can also help accomplish this goal. One way is through contrasting colors. Another is with bold patterns.

A third idea is that round rugs highlight a particular element of your interior design. Picture a round rug with an outer layer as a border. The inner circle is where you would place your design element — perhaps a chair or other unique furniture piece. The shape of the rug will naturally draw attention to this part of your home.

Hang it like a painting.

Have you ever considered hanging a rug on your walls? Often used with rectangular rugs, you can also hang a round rug. With so many patterns and designs, this is yet another creative way to use a round rug in your home’s design.
