Holiday Decorating to Compliment Your Rugs

The holiday season is right around the corner. From Thanksgiving to Hanukkah to
Christmas and more, homeowners across the country (and beyond) will soon be
swapping out their home décor to match the season. Regardless of the holiday, there
are plenty of ways to tie in your existing rug with seasonal décor. Here are our top five
tips for holiday decorating to complement your rugs.

holiday decorating with rugs

Lean into typical holiday colors
The holiday season has no lack of décor color choices. With softer browns and oranges in November to rich reds and greens in December, you can mark the calendar with the introduction of these hues into home décor choices.

Our first tip for holiday decorating is to lean into those shades. Persian, Oriental, and Turkish rugs all complement those colors, with the weaver often employing red and orange in the design. Look at the patterns and colors within your rug and choose décor
items that match.

Or go with cream, white, and clear options
Our second tip is to lean the opposite way. Holiday decorating often includes softer
creams, whites, and even clear objects (such as crystal reindeer on a table). These also
can compliment your rug, especially if it’s a darker option. These choices act as a
contrast, creating a classy look that highlights your rug exceptionally well.

Put it under your tree
Whether fresh cut or artificial, a common holiday decorating item during this time of
year is a Christmas tree. As you decorate it for the holidays, keep in mind both of our
above tips with the color of your ornaments and lights.

But before you decorate it, you need to figure out placement. Depending on your living
room layout, you may be able to reconfigure it to strategically place all or part of your
tree on top of your rug. We will encourage you to be particularly careful with a live tree,
as you don’t want to let the rug get and stay wet for the next four to six weeks.

However, as long as you’re careful this can act as a great way to tie in your existing rug
with your holiday decor.

Stairway décor
Just a quick tip on stairway décor: as with the rest of the choices in your living spaces, don’t overlook the way stairway decorations can mesh with your rug. Your stairway may be further away from your rug than your couch or tree, but it still should tie into the room thematically. This is especially true if you choose to light your stairway railing.

Speaking of lighting
We’ve mentioned lighting a few times in this blog, and don’t want to overlook it. Generally speaking, we would recommend sticking with clear lights over colored ones. These will blend better with your rug, whether it’s Persian, Oriental, or Turkish in origin.

It starts with selecting the right rug (or rugs)
Some homeowners will roll up their standard rug and use a holiday-specific one.
Others will choose one rug to use all year long. Regardless of where you stand on that,
holiday decorating to complement your rugs starts with choosing the right one. It
should be able to blend in with both your room and your preferred seasonal
decorations.
