How to Size and Decorate With Round Rugs

When you picture buying a rug, what shape comes to mind? Most people picture rectangular rugs, since those are very common. However, round rugs are just as beautiful and functional as any other shape of rug. Today we’re talking about how to determine what size rug you need and how to decorate effectively with round rugs.

How are round rugs sized and sold?

To determine what size of rectangular rug you need, you typically measure its width and length. For example, a 4×10 rug would be four feet wide and ten feet long.

However, round rugs don’t have sides that are easy to measure this way. Instead, rug-sellers and homeowners measure them by diameter. For those of us who don’t remember middle-school algebra, diameter is any straight line that passes through the center of a circle.

Round rug measurements work the same way: hold the end of the tape measure at one side, then pull the tape measure across the middle to the other side.

How do I figure out what size I need for a room?

Before you pick out a rug, it’s best to measure the room you want to put it in. You should also consider where you want it to go, and how you want the furniture arranged around it. Will you be centering the rug under your dining room table and chairs? Or will it act as an area rug in your living room?

Let’s assume you’ll be using it in your dining room. First, measure the width of your table and chairs with the chairs pulled out as if someone is sitting in them. If you have a square table, it shouldn’t matter which side you use. However, if your table is rectangular or oblong, be sure to use the longest side for your measurements.

Let’s assume your table and chairs give you a length of ten feet. Ideally, you would want some additional space beyond each chair. Therefore, you’ll probably need an eleven-foot rug for this area.

How do I decorate with a round rug?

Decorating with a round rug can be fun. When used in conjunction with your room’s furniture, it can create a unique look and feel within your room. Since everyone tends to lean toward rectangular rugs, having a round rug will make your home feel different than everyone else’s house.

Just remember to use our tips so that you’re able to avoid decorating mistakes when adding a round rug to any part of your home.

PRO TIP: don’t forget the edges! Keep in mind the distance between the edge of your rug and the walls of your room. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least six inches of exposed flooring between where the rug stops and the wall begins.
