Should a living room rug be bigger than the couch?

Finding the correct size of rug for your living room can feel stressful. Why? One reason  is because a high-quality area rug is an investment. And as with any investment, you  want to be sure it’s the right one. While we’ve talked about rug sizing previously, today  we’re going to focus on one specific question. Should a living room rug be bigger than  the couch?

What options are there for living room rug sizes?

To briefly recap, there are a few ways you can utilize a rug within your living room. One  simple way is to purchase a rug that will act as a runner, such as in a narrow space.  Another is to center the rug under your entire sitting area. A third is to simply center it  under your coffee table.

Yet another variation of this layout is the front-legs-only option. This means that the  front legs of everything in your living room — your end tables, your love seats, accent  furniture, as well as your primary couch — will sit on the rug. Their back legs will not.

How will this affect…

…the comfort, decor, traffic patterns, and utilization of your furniture in your living  room? For example, a home may only have hardwood flooring. If none of your couch’s  legs are on top of the rug, there’s a strong likelihood your couch will slide and move as  people sit on it.

Likewise, the question of whether your living room rug should extend past your couch  and other sitting areas will factor into your choice of decor. A rug that covers all but the  last handful of inches of your floor will look different than one that does not.

Furthermore, you’ll need to consider comfort. For example, if you choose to have a rug  only under your central coffee table, you, your family, and any visitors will likely walk  along the edges of the rug more often. How will this feel? Could it even be a tripping  hazard?

Then again, you may have a relatively small living room. If you recall, a rug that is  bigger than your sitting area should not touch your walls. You should leave  approximately ten inches between the edge of your rug and the wall itself. If you don’t  have those ten inches to spare, you’ll need to go with a smaller rug anyway.

So should a living room rug be bigger than the couch?

Unfortunately, this is not a simple yes or no question. The reality is there are a ton of  things to keep in mind when deciding if a living room rug should be bigger than your  couch and other furniture. The answer to the question we posed today is based on  your living room layout, the purpose of your rug, and how it ties into the rest of the  room.
