So after months of research, you’ve finally decided to take the plunge into the world of Persian Rugs. First, congratulations! We know you’re going to be incredibly pleased with your decision! This, of course, is a great transition into rug design. As with any other type of rug, whether Modern, Turkish, Hand-Knotted, or Oriental, Persian rugs have varying designs. Let’s look at the four most popular Persian rug designs and how you can use each of them in your home.
How to use a Persian Rug in your home
Before we unpack the top four design motifs, we thought it would be a good idea to tackle the latter question collectively first. While each style has its use case (which we’ll clarify shortly), the reality is there are quite literally dozens of Persian rug design families.
So how do you use one in your home? Start with your room layout. Decide how big of a rug you’ll need to fill your space. Persian rugs come in a variety of sizes, and we carry virtually every size you would possibly need. Those start as small as a 1×2 and go up as large as a 9×13.
Color is the next important factor. Will you be basing your room’s decor on your rug’s color, or will it accent existing paint and decorations?
Finally, decide if you want your rug to be the focal point or to blend seamlessly into the space. After figuring out these three answers, you’re ready to choose between the four most popular Persian designs.
Persian Rug Design #1: Hamadan
As expected with a Persian rug, Hamadan rugs are hand-woven. Often, they’ll incorporate angular designs and symmetrical knots. The colors of a Hamadan Persian rug can vary, incorporating the traditional reds, whites, and oranges that you would expect. In addition, other tones such as navy and cream are not unheard of.
Persian Rug Design #2: Heriz
The second most popular Persian rug design is the Heriz rug. These get their name from the Heris, East Azerbaijan region in Iran. Bold patterns dominate the Heriz Persian rug family, with geometric patterns and medallions spread throughout the design.
Persian Rug Design #3: Kashan
A Kashan rug is the third most popular Persian rug design. The prevailing difference here compared to the first two most popular Persian rug designs is the use of silk. As with Heriz, medallions are a popular motif.
Persian Rug Design #4: Tabriz
The final option in our top four is Tabriz, named after the city of Tabriz which is also one of the oldest rug-making regions in the world. Tabriz rugs are incredibly diverse,
featuring intricate designs that incorporate everything from pictorials to the popular medallions found in other types of Persian rug styles.
