How to Decorate with Runner Rugs of Any Size

Rugs come in all shapes and sizes. This is even true of runner rugs, which are known for being remarkably long and narrow. Despite the wide variety of sizes available, most people stick to “normal” sized runner rugs. But what is the normal size for a runner rug?

A quick Google search reveals that most runner rugs are 2-3 feet wide and 6-8 feet long. However, the fact that these sizes are popular doesn’t mean that they’re the right size for your home. So once you measure the room you want to put your new rug in, you can consult a credible rug-dealer to find the exact size you need.

What’s a runner rug?

Most people know that area rugs are usually long and rectangular. Runner rugs are also long and rectangular, but they distinguish themselves from area rugs by being much narrower than they are long. This narrowness is why runner rugs lend themselves so well to being used in entryways, hallways, foyers, and staircases.

Is it smart to use antique rugs as runner rugs?

Many people believe that old things are fragile, and in most cases they’re right. However, antique rugs are a notable exception to this rule of thumb. Because antique rugs are hand-made and woven with wool, silk, and cotton of the highest quality, they’re built to last for centuries.

At Rug Source, we carry antique runner rugs in our inventory, including multiple pieces that pre-date the 1900s. However, it’s more common for runner rugs to be newer, falling somewhere between 20-100 years old (this qualifies them as vintage).

How small of a runner rug can I get?

The smallest runner options are usually available in sizes such as 1’x3’, 2’x4’, and 2’x5’. These smaller rugs are ideal for short entryways, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and more. Since rugs add both form and function to your space, these smaller sizes are perfect for these more roughly-used parts of your home.

How big can runner rugs be?

And now we’re getting into some truly impressive rugs. These are the runners that, while still having a width between 1-4 feet, can be up to fifteen feet long… and sometimes even longer! You typically find runner rugs of this size in a large gathering space, a long hallway, or being used on wooden stairs to make them less slippery.

What if I want something medium-sized?

These sizes are probably the most well-known of the bunch. Many of these size options work well in the hallways and entryways of smaller homes. Common sizes in this category would range from 1’x6’ and 6’x9′.

So… is there a normal size of a runner rug?

With all of these size options to choose from, what is considered normal? In our opinion, every one of the listed sizes above can be considered normal. It’s more about how you use the rug and whether or not it fits your needs. For example, while 15-foot runners won’t fit in a typical bedroom, that length would look perfect in your hallway or kitchen. It’s simply about recognizing the right use case for each size instead of focusing on a typical, normal size of runner rug.
