The Art of Mixing & Matching Different Types of Rugs
When you’re gearing up for your next home décor update, one thing that you won’t want to overlook is the art of mixing and matching rugs. There are many creative ways to combine colors and textures, whether in a layering context or using more than one rug in a room.
Here are a few tips to help you get started!
Tip 1: Become a master of layering.
Layering rugs has become a popular trend this year because it can work well in any home. To get started, consider what type of rug will be your base layer. Many homeowners will use a sisal rug as their base layer. Next, they’ll place a smaller rug on top, usually one with a bolder color, more active design, or vastly different texture.
The base layer acts as a support with colors and patterns that accentuate the other rugs. It also acts as a rug pad for the top layer, though we would still recommend a pad below your base layer for extra grip.
The art of mixing and matching rugs also has practical benefits. For instance, layering can add texture. Imagine sitting on your sofa with a layered rug set up in front of you. The sensation of resting your feet on layered rugs is much different. Layered rugs can also provide extra comfort while walking, plus a cushioned layer that’s safe for pets or toddlers to fall on.
Tip 2: Use a combination of different shapes.
Have you ever considered using both a round and rectangular rug in the same room? Imagine a large living room. In the seating area, you have a traditional rectangular area rug. But across the room, you have a smaller round rug that acts as a focal point or makes the space feel bigger.
Round rugs can visually separate an entryway from the rest of the living-room, designate which space you’ve set aside for the kids, or any other creative ideas you can imagine. Either way, the combination is unique and can help set your living room apart.
Tip 3: Mix and match different colors.
There are two main ways you can experiment with colors: using vastly different colors or using highly similar ones.
If you have adjacent rooms, you don’t have to use the exact same color rug in both areas. Instead, you can use contrasting colors as a way of highlighting the unique features of both places. This works well if you want your dining room to feel more formal while creating a more casual vibe in the living area. Your choice of rug color can help with this goal.
Alternatively, you can use complementary colors to make everything feel cohesive throughout your house. Looping back to our layering tips, your base layer may have a solid, medium-gray tone. Then your second layer can be an Oushak rug with a light blue pattern. Because gray and blue work well together, you’ve just accomplished a decorative masterpiece with little effort!
