Materials Used in Heriz Serapi Rugs

Heriz Serapi rugs are a unique and highly sought-after design within the rug industry. Since multiple fWhen Googling Persian rugs to decide what you want for your living-room, you may encounter a Persian style called the Heriz Serapi. There are two features that make the Heriz Serapi stand out in the rug industry: their unique history, and the materials used to make them. Today, we’ll discuss the latter in detail to deepen your understanding of this unique and beautiful style of rug.

But first, what is a Heriz Serapi rug?

Before we look at the materials used in Heriz Serapi rugs, we should first define what they are. Because these works of art hail from Iran, they are a subset of the broader category of Persian rugs. Heriz Serapi rugs are made of all-natural materials and designed with vibrant colors and geometric patterns which feature large medallions.

Heriz Serapi rugs are always made of high-quality materials. Additionally, because they are hand-woven instead of machine-made, they come in a wide variety of sizes. They can range anywhere from 2×4 feet to 9×11 feet, which means no matter how big or small your space is, you can be sure to find one that fits.

Where and when does the Heriz Serapi rug come from?

In a previous blog, we extensively covered the history of Heriz Serapi rugs. To briefly summarize, this type of rug comes from the regions surrounding the towns of Heris and Serab in East Azerbaijan, Iran. The two communities melded their individual rug-weaving styles together to create Heriz Serapi rugs. Because this style requires the very best materials, the Heriz Serapi is one of the highest-quality rugs on the market.

The Heriz Serapi style has been around for a long time, and people are still creating this type of rug today, but we don’t know the exact year that the style was born. However, some pieces currently on the market predate the 1900’s. The age of these pieces, combined with the fact that they’re made by hand from the best materials, make them so distinct from other Persian styles that the rug industry made “Heriz Serapi” a trademark name.

What are Heriz Serapi rugs made of?

The weavers who create Heriz Serapi rugs set themselves apart in two ways: by using all-natural vegetable dyes instead of synthetic coloring, and by using wool with an unusually high iron content.

The average person can hear the term “vegetable dye” and have a general idea about how it’s made, but how do the weavers put extra iron in the sheeps’ wool? The secret is in the water their sheep drink. Because the communities that created the Heriz Serapi style are located near iron-rich mountain streams, their sheep bring extra iron into their bodies every time they take a drink. Their bodies process the excess by infusing it into the wool. The result: their wool is stronger and more durable than that from other sheep.
