Oushak Rugs

Types of Oushak Rugs

Within the larger Turkish rug category is a specialty style known as Oushak rugs. These hail from the city of Uşak, Turkey as well as the surrounding community. Known for their high quality, similar weaving techniques as Turkish rugs, there are several types of Oushak Rugs available on the market today.

Antique Oushak Rugs

Let’s start with a rare variation. One of the types of Oushak rugs is antique. Due to declining interest in Oriental rugs overall throughout the 17th to 19th centuries, fewer weavers knew how to create Oushak rugs during those years. This means that, as demand rose in the 20th century, there was less available on the market than typical.

Likewise, with the Oushak style rising in popularity, finding a genuine antique — meaning over 100 years old — Oushak rug is a rarity. When you run across one, you’ve found a true gem!

Colorful Oushak Rugs

There are a handful of popular colors of Oushak rugs. Those combinations mean that the types of Oushak Rugs you’ll find for sale today are often rather colorful. Some of those include reds, yellows, greens, blues, and grays.

However, we want to emphasize that color doesn’t always mean bold. Often, Oushak rugs use vegetable dye. Depending on the weaver’s creative vision, these color combinations will often be more muted. Shades of red are common, though often lean toward cinnamon and burnt orange. Gray is also a popular choice, though this lends itself to a softer design.

Oushak Rug Shapes

The third option in our list of the different types of Oushak rugs is focused on shapes. Most commonly, Oushak rugs are rectangular. Occasionally, you’ll find a round rug.

Another common shape of an Oushak rug is a long, rectangular runner rug. These often have a narrow width of 2-3 feet with lengths often exceeding 10 feet.

Oushak Rug Sizing

Another common variation of the types of Oushak rugs is their sizing. You’ll find a wide variety of sizes, as Oushak rugs are often handmade. This can lead to rugs that are as small as a 2 feet x 3 feet all the way to larger variations of 9 feet x 15 feet and everything in between.

Patterns within Oushak Rugs

Did you know that one of the types of Oushak rugs includes unique patterns? Often, Oushak rugs include large medallions, floral patterns, or other geometric shapes. But they can also include everything from animals to tribal designs and checkered patterns to trellis options.

Other Types of Oushak Rugs

Are there other types of Oushak rugs, as well? Of course! You’ll find varying weave types such as hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and occasionally machine-made. There are also extensive options for colors we haven’t mentioned including blacks, purples, and pink. Finally, Oushak rugs can come in a variety of pile variations.

Simply put, with Oushak rugs there is something for everyone. Would you like to learn more about what we offer or how our team can help you sort through the types of Oushak rugs? Then let our team know by sending them a message here or you can browse our online inventory here.
