Abstract Rugs

What are Some Design Tips for Using an Abstract Rug in my Home?

Floor coverings are an important part of any redecorating plan, and choosing the right design is equally essential. But how do you narrow it down from the thousands of options at your disposal? If you are utilizing a more traditional design, timeless rugs like  Persian and Oriental are the obvious choice. If you’re planning on a more modern design, however, you might be a little unsure of the direction you should take with your floor coverings. These are our favorite design tips for using an abstract rug in your home.

Contrast is key

The first of our design tips for using an abstract rug is to focus on contrast. Choosing contrasting elements in your room design draws the eye in. It builds interest while also creating balance. Pair dark walls with a light rug featuring a bold pattern for a cohesive and interesting design.

Another option is to choose contrasting colors on the color wheel as the basis of your design. For example, a crimson rug would pair beautifully with a green velvet sofa.

Pair colors and patterns

The second of our design tips for using an abstract rug is to pair like-minded colors and patterns. This will not only become a talking point in your space but will also make it stand out from other areas in your home. Another way to grab attention and invoke interest is by pairing hues and shapes that contrast like in our previously mentioned design tip. Consider placing a rug with bold lines under a brightly colored table and chairs in your dining room. Or pair a striking, brightly colored, geometric rug with a  black sofa.

Or consider picking one color scheme to build on

Of course, sometimes sticking to one color or shades of the same color can also be an eye-catching design element. Choose a color family, let’s say blue. Find a rug that stands out and then select pillows, throws, and art that contain the same blue shades as are in the rug for a cohesive yet unique style.

Mix the old and new

Character. It’s what makes an old farmhouse stand apart from a builder-grade newly built home. But that doesn’t mean only old houses have character. Rather, add character to any space in your home by blending the old and the new.

A modern, abstract rug forms the center focal point of your space when paired with an antique hutch, vintage wall art, mirrors, or an ornate fireplace surround. It blends the best of years gone by with modern sensibilities.

Add interest to a boring area

Do you have a random corner, laundry room, or mudroom that needs a little boost?  One simple way to achieve a new look in these small spaces is by adding an abstract rug. A mirror on the wall can add depth to a small space while light-colored walls

freshen an outdated and dark area. Adding a bold, abstract rug creates visual interest  and instantly elevates the space around it.
