What Colors are Used in Turkish Rugs

Turkish Rugs are beautiful with a rich history dating back hundreds of years. They  sometimes have unique designs and bright, bold colors while at other times have a  more muted vibe, such as in Oushak styles. Regardless, they only use the highest  quality silk or wool materials. However, to those who are less familiar with the  differences between Turkish vs Oriental vs Persian rugs, it might not be clear which rug  hails from which category. To help with that, today we’re going to focus on the color,  unpacking which colors are used in Turkish Rugs.

What colors are used in Turkish Rugs? Only natural ones

Before we dive into the specific colors that are used in Turkish Rugs, we wanted to  highlight an important distinction. Many rugs that may appear Turkish in style cannot  be technically called so if they use synthetic or artificial dyes.

Instead, authentic Turkish Rugs use natural dyes. Not only is this better for your health,  but it also helps the rug last longer and continue to appear vibrant after years of use.  Of note, too, is that authentic Turkish Rugs are often one-of-a-kind. There may be  similarities between two rugs, but because they are handmade you will never have two  identical rugs or the same rug as your next-door neighbor. In other words, there is no  mass production going on here: each rug is made with care, quality, and — we say this  sincerely — passion.

The color red in Turkish Rugs

Whether in a bright, bold pattern or a muted Oushak-style design, red is one of the  most common colors used in a Turkish Rug. Not only does red make a powerful  statement, but this color of dye also symbolizes several positive emotions. Those  include happiness and joy along with a sense of wealth.

The color green in Turkish Rugs

With Islam as the predominant religion in Turkish culture, it’s only natural that this  would appear in the design of Turkish Rugs. The color green represents the belief in a  blissful afterlife and is another common color to look for.

The color blue in Turkish Rugs

As a compliment to red, the color blue represents nobility. It’s also symbolic of the idea  of grandeur, creating a sense of luxury and comfortability.

The color yellow in Turkish Rugs

Continuing the idea of the choice of color representing cultural beliefs, yellow (when  included in a Turkish Rug) represents the desire to keep evil at bay.

The color black in Turkish Rugs

Finally, black is the combination of all colors on a color wheel. In a Turkish Rug, it  symbolizes the idea of purification and elimination of anxiety from daily life.
