4 Fun Ways to Utilize 3×5 Rugs
In the candy world, companies like to release a “fun-sized” candy bar. They’re smaller versions of their larger brethren. And, while we’d hesitate to call a 3×5 rug small, they don’t necessarily work as an area rug. So, to keep the theme going, let’s look at four “fun” ways to use a 3×5 rug.
First, how do you know the size you need?
While we’ve discussed rug size in relation to room size in previous blogs, we wanted to touch on it here. Ideally, if your rug is under a dining room table, you’ll want it to extend far enough beyond the table so that the rear legs are still on the rug when someone pulls a chair out.
In a living room, you have a few options. Do you want the rug to be under the coffee table only? Do you want it to rest just under the front of your furniture? Or do you want it to fill the whole space with only 6-9 inches between the edge of the rug and the wall?
Once you know the size you need, you can begin your search. Today, we focus on 3×5 rugs and four fun or unexpected places to use them.
1. Entryways
Does your home have an open and inviting entryway? Many homes have a small entry or even a hallway space, making choosing a rug more difficult. A runner rug or small throw rug is typically all you can use. If you have a more extensive entry—perhaps as part of an open floor plan—a 3×5 rug could be used here to define the space further and separate it from the rest of the room.
2. Layered with Other Rugs
We’ve talked about layered rugs many times recently. It adds an unexpected element to a room. It can also be budget-friendly if you want the look of a one-of-a-kind Oriental option but can’t afford the size your space requires. Layer a smaller 3×5 rug over a larger sisal or jute rug for a unique and customized look.
3. Breakfast or Reading Nooks
If you have a small area separated from the main living or dining areas, a 3×5 rug is likely just the size to highlight this space. Whether it’s a reading corner with a cozy chair, ottoman, and side table or a breakfast nook with a small table, placing a 3×5 rug here is a creative way to set this space apart.
4. Enclosed Porches
Are you one of those lucky homeowners with an enclosed porch or patio? Sometimes referred to as a four-season room, these spaces typically feature a seating area or a porch swing. Here, the homeowner likely enjoys a cup of coffee or tea as the sun rises, spends a few hours engrossed in a good book, or participates in a conversation with a friend or family member at the end of a long day.
A 3×5 rug is the perfect size for this slightly smaller space.
