Koliaei

Among the woven rugs in Kurdish villages in the west of Iran, some of them can be found that are attributed to the Kurd semi nomadic or sedentary residing this area.

For example between Songor, AsadAbad and Kermanshah, Koliaeis are living that are very active group in weaving and produce delicate and exquisite rugs. Koliaeis usually use cotton yarn for both warp and weft.

Among the knots only one weft crosses that this weft stretched to give a high compression to warp. In some older samples, weft is wool kind colored in red, pile is shiny and thick wool and will be cut long. Sometimes camel wool is used for warp or design. Colors are brilliant and greatly opposite: the spectrum of red and yellow overcome the other colors, nowadays artificial colors are used instead of Ronas and Esparak. The common design is a prayer rug in size of 130*250 centimeter or a zar and ahalf.

Koliaei rugs are decorated with noble designs depended to clans customs. The most famous design is known as “Bandi” or “shirshekari” that its flowering design simplified and used in busy background like in Safaviyeh era. In this kind of decoration, the background is divided to network of diamonds that is made of pedicles and little roses. This form among the rugs from east of Malayer, especially Mishen was also customary and also in famous side rugs of old Hamedan similar kinds can be found. These designs sometimes are woven in the corners and in other items expand to the whole background freely.

A lot of Koliaei rugs are decorated to MinaKhani designs that are woven on a navy-blue background or a design formed of flowering pedicles in a diamond network is seen in them. Usually the margin is a simplified shape and has inscription.

Another design is seen in Koliaei rugs that’s how a hexagonal is placed in the center of the rug on a very dark background that a pattern like arrowhead is seen in each peak. This design is fame as “TakhteJamshid” that is the Persian name of Persepolis palace. Actually Jamshid is mythical character. In Iranian epic phenomena and in the book of ShahName Ferdosi, Jamshid is named as the first Iranian emperor and the king of Persepolis palace.

Most of the Koliaei rugs have parallelepiped bergamot that is woven on a monotone bachground that was the artistic characteristic of Kurdish people.
