3 Common Patterns of Oushak Rugs
When choosing an Oushak rug, it’s important to consider three things: color, because your new rug should complement the walls and furniture; size, because it needs to fit in your space; and pattern, because you have a specific aesthetic in mind and it needs to match. Today, we’re going to talk about the popular patterns of Oushak rugs.
Based on our experience with acquiring and selling Oushak rugs, we believe there are three popular patterns of Oushak Rugs: geometric, floral, and borderless. A handful of other types exist, all of which include traditional motifs that reflect the weavers’ values. But for simplicity’s sake, we’re going to stick with discussing the three most common patterns.
Pattern #1: Geometric
Geometric patterns feature heavily in Oushak rugs. Sometimes, the weavers use big central shapes surrounded by smaller accents to create a round or star-shaped central medallion. Other times, the weaver will choose to create neat, uniform rows of much smaller shapes and patterns. Though vastly different, both variations of geometric Oushak rugs can bring the beauty of symmetry and clean lines to any home.
Pattern #2: Floral
Many antique rugs feature beautiful floral patterns, including Oushak rugs. However, Oushak floral rugs stand out from the rest because even if the pattern itself is symmetrical, sometimes the flowers aren’t. Instead of weaving orderly rows of the same flower, or alternating two or three different ones in neat arrangements, Oushak rug-weavers create a wide variety of flowers in multiple colors, often using pastel and jewel-toned colors together. As a result, floral Oushak rugs add an element of playful color to your home.
Pattern #3: Borderless
While both geometric and floral Oushak rugs typically feature wide decorative borders around the edge, there are some rugs that have very thin borders, or no borders at all. On borderless Oushak rugs, the pattern (whether geometric or floral) reaches all the way to the edges. These rugs also typically use bolder, brighter colors and look similar to modern-day rugs. This makes them an excellent option for people with more modern design preferences.
What do the 3 patterns have in common?
The three Oushak rug patterns described above may be distinct from each other, but they all borrow cultural motifs from other Turkish Rugs. Some of these elements include:
- Birds
- Dragons
- Leaves
- Clouds
- Moons
- Local and tribal variations of all the above elements
However, no matter what pattern of Oushak rug you prefer, these woven works of art are known for their durability. Since Oushak rugs are hand-made with the finest materials, they’re designed to last you for decades.
